Child Protection Policy

As an entity that functions on Binghamton University’s campus, the Student Association of Binghamton University, Inc. is dedicated to working with and adhering to Binghamton University’s Child Protection Policies, including but not limited to, all applicable SUNY system policies, guidance, and the requirements set forth for University campuses.

Resources to know:


Any organization seeking to host an event wherein a student organization or its members will take on temporary guardianship (custody, control, and supervision) of under-17 children must complete the following steps to gain full approval PRIOR to the event taking place.

  • MINIMUM of 45 business days prior to the event:
    • Complete Step 1: Request to Sponsor an Event With Children. When form is complete, turn it in to Matt Johnson, Assistant Director of the Student Association.
      • Once received, the Assistant Director will complete a preliminary review of the form. Upon completion of preliminary review, the form will be sent to the University for approval.
    • After initial University approval, a Revocable Permit will be issued by the University for the event. This document must be agreed upon and executed (signed) by SA Officers and the University prior to the event moving forward.
  • MINIMUM of 7 business days prior to the event:
    • All students who will have contact with minors/children must complete and submit Step 2: Child Protection/Volunteer Information Collection Form along with a digital head shot for ID purposes.
      • Once received, the Assistant Director will run the names and dates of birth of all listed volunteers through the New York and United States Sex Offender Registry systems.
    • All approved and cleared students (Covered Persons) will have IDs created for the single event. Covered persons must have these IDs on display at all times during the event. The Event Coordinator (identified in Step 1 – Request to Sponsor an Event With Children) will receive an e-mail when the IDs are ready for pickup.
