Spring 2009 Auditions

About the Audition Process

A) The Solo

Before the audition, we will ask you to fill out a sheet of general information (about yourself, your music experience, contact information, etc...). During the audition, we will ask you to sing a short snippet (usually a verse and a chorus) of any song that you like in front of the current members of the group. After that, we will test your range using a keyboard as accompaniment. Finally, we will play a set of a series of notes (usually only three or four) and ask you to sing them back to us. This is to test to see how well your listening skills coincide with your singing ability.

B) The Callback

Later on that day (usually by noon or so), we will post a list of people we have invited to be called back to sing on a group part. The importance of the callback is to see how well you pick up on a part in a short period of time and how your voice blends within the group. Blending is very important in any background part in an a cappella group. We will put you on a voice part and teach you part of one of our own songs. We will run through the song a few times and, eventually, you will be asked to sing your part by yourself in a quartet with the other three voice parts. If there are no conflicts with another a cappella group, you will hear back from us shortly after the callback.

C) A Cappella Conflicts

There are nine a cappella groups at Binghamton University, and we encourage you to try out for as many groups as you'd like. You may, however, only belong to one a cappella group. In the instance that you are accepted into more than one group, you will receive a phone call from an anonymous third party asking you to choose which group you'd like to belong to. Once you've reached your decision, the a cappella group will contact you with rehearsal times and welcome you into the group!

The Vibes sincerely look forward to your audition for the Spring 2009 semester!

Good luck!
