About BUJA

History

The Binghamton University Japanese Association (BUJA) was founded by Yumiko Yamamoto and Toshiko S. Furuta on October 19th, 1993. BUJA was the first Japanese organization chartered under Asian Student Union (ASU) as a subgroup. The name "BUJA" is closely associated with the Kanji character 武者, which means "Samurai Spirit" or "Samurai Person," and is pronouced "Bu-sha." BUJA is an organization of much diversity. Because the number of Japanese students studying at SUNY Binghamton is limited, many of the members are non-Japanese. However, those members are eager to learn and spread the Japanese culture.

Mission Statement

Binghamton University Japanese Association is a student-run organization organized to promote Japanese culture and language to the students of SUNY Binghamton and the people of Binghamton community; to stimulate closer affiliation of Japanese/Japanese American and who are interested in Japanese Culture, and to support international students to better adjust to the American culture and to maximize the value of their experience obtained in the United States.

話そう! Episode 17 NHK
Added: April 28, 2009

So I was lucky enough to appear on the Japanese National TV Network(NHK)'s evening news, including a [very] short interview.

I don't have time to add subtitles to the entire 6-minute news clip now, so it's in Japanese. Besides, I'll look a lot cooler if you don't know what I'm saying XD

Nah I'm just kidding, from the five minute interview, they aired:
"Well, your muscles and stuff must get stronger, right?"
and
"Everyone's gotta do their best!"
Without context and the first half of my answers, I look like an idiot. But hey, there's no such thing as bad publicity, eh?

Also, the "Name tag" on the left side of the screen when I'm answering simply says "Participating International Student" XD

And the intro song is the "Numa-Numa" song. And yes, I have actually heard this on Japanese radio since I got here. The play the most random things imaginable.

Hey, This is the second half of my much-promised video on Japanese Case Particles.

You can view the first half of the video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZghxM...

I'm hoping that this video can be genuinely helpful for people learning Japanese as a second language, and it represents the, well, not culmination, but the sum of my linguistic understanding of Japanese grammar and it's organization along the lines of grammatical case particles.

話そう! Episode 16 Part 1 of 2
Added: March 23, 2009

Hey guys, I'm back with my much-promised video on Japanese Case Particles. I'm hoping that this video can be genuinely helpful for people learning Japanese as a second language, and it represents the, well, not culmination, but the sum of my linguistic understanding of Japanese grammar and it's organization along the lines of grammatical case particles.

This video was originally scripted to be quite a bit longer, but I wanted to make it in one video, and still retain it's communicative value to non-linguistically-trained viewers, so I ended up cutting out quite a bit, reshooting the whole video, and editing it heavily. However it still didn't quite break 10 minutes, so I've had to split it in half and upload it as two separate videos. Hopefully I'll soon figure out how to organize it as a play list so that second part will automatically play after this half, but until then here's the link to the second half:

Hisashiburi! (Long time no see!)

So I finished up my second and busiest trimester at Tsukuba, and made this short bit to let you guys know I'm still alive.

Also, the credits at the ending got cut-off, the song is "天体観測" by Bump of Chicken.

Just a quick video of my New Year, fairly normal by Japanese standards. I also used this video to experiment with subtitles and compression codec and ratios, so hopefully this will work out well.

Added: December 7, 2008

The cooking bit that didn't make it into the last upload. Enjoy and see you guys later!
話そう! Episode 12
Added: December 7, 2008

Back from a several-week video-making hiatus. Just to get you guys up to date. As I mentioned in the video, I was originally going to include a mini cooking show, but that put the video at just over YouTube's 10 minute limit, so I'll give that part its (I know I said "it's" in the actual video) own video that I'll upload tomorrow after this part finishes. Hope you guys enjoy it!

P.S. I've had to downgrade the video quality because since YouTube revamped everything around Thanksgiving .mov files are not able to be uploaded...
話そう! Episode 11 - 25 English Songs that Japanese People Know
Added: November 15, 2008

I think this one's pretty self-explanatory. I'll get back to answering questions and being constructive next week.

Edit* Oh boy... subtitles mishap, the last song, "Top of the World" is really by "The Carpenters," and not by "My Chemical Romance!"
話そう! Episode 10
Added: November 01, 2008

Hey Guys! Sorry it took me while to get a new episode up, I was really busy for a few weeks with midterms and stuff, and I lost my internet connection.

Anyway, I'm back, with more videos on the way, and a little recap of the past few weeks coming.

Also, I'm uploading in a bit higher quality this time, lemme know how it works out for you!

Intro: "Epileptic Crisis" by Nightmare
話そう! Episode 9 - Lampslides
Added: October 06, 2008

Lampslides is a collection of short clips and pictures that I couldn't fit into the previous episodes but wanted to show anyway. So enjoy them if you will, and I'll be back with a real episode on the 花火大会 (Fireworks festival)

Intro: "Lucky Star" by Motteke Sailor Fuku

Outro: "Radio Free Zerg" by Blizzard (a bit of a gamer joke, but also where I'd really, really love to get a job, oh yea, and I heard this song on a Korean student's computer in Japan, so I dunno if I really counts but I wanted to use it so :p)

Also, a really cool thing about Japan that sets it apart from the rest of the world is that the photograph was around during the end of the so-called "Feudalistic Japan", before it was modernized. Check out some such photos here:
http://www.visualizingcultures.com/be...
Lastly, the most common English tune that I hear here is "Shall we Dance" from the King and I. And every Japanese person I've asked has been oblivious to where the song is from.

Also, for the record, I make no claim of having coined these gaijin superpowers, as far as I know they are a running joke amongst the international students on campus.

Update 2:
I spent the past weekend working at the University festival, this week is midterms, and I'm moving this weekend, so I haven't been able to make any videos and I probably won't get any done this week, but don't think I've forgotten you guys, I've got material still!
話そう! Episode 8 - Kyoto Wedding Special Part 2
Added: October 05, 2008

Part two of the Kyoto wedding special!

Mid/Outtro: "Ready, Steady, Go!" by L'arc en Ciel

話そう! Episode 8 - Kyoto Wedding Special
Added: October 05, 2008

After a few tries and stops, I've managed to get the first part of the wedding special done, with probably one or two more parts to come, then I also am a bit behind, with material for the next two episodes that I haven't had time to edit yet (including material form last night's fireworks festival, one of the largest in Japan), I'll try to get as much done tonight as I can, じゃあ、がんばります!

The intro is "I was born to Love You" by Queen, Asahi (a major Japanese beer company) is currently using several Queen songs in their current ad campaign. But in general, Japanese establishments tend to play background music of one of the following varieties:
Oldies/Musicals/Operas, late-90s pop, Metal, or stuff in english I have never heard before... Public PA systems tend to play the latter.

I've gotta remember not to make videos when I'm tired...

Midtro: "For Now" from Avenue Q (I'm making up words!)

This blog is just me talkin a bit and catching up on my question-answering duties.

Hope you guys enjoy!

I already have a pretty good idea what the next few episodes will be about, I'll try and get some Japanese conversation in, and also since I'll be heading down to Kyoto later this week for a wedding I think it'll probably have no small part of that.

Oh yea, announcement, I got my internet fixed a few days ago, so I have it now, yay!
話そう! Episode 5
Added: September 08, 2008

Intro: "Abandoned" by Kamelot (It's a fitting song, in my opinion. So far the Japanese' choice of music in public places has pleased me greatly)

Sorry for Taking a while with this video. The thing I must convey is how Tsukuba University never ceases to amaze me with its sheer incompetence; an example of which has been a distinctive lack of internet access for me since I arrived here.

For more pictures of my cell and how it compares to the International Student Dorms where I should've been placed, check my photobucket at:

http://s259.photobucket.com/albums/hh...

Also, for a video of some poor saps from two years ago in my very own dorm (same floor) check here:

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=0eHcL9-3MKg
The only difference is that between then and now they apparently fired the Janitor since nothing looks to have been cleaned in a good year at least.

P.S. Today's word is "Hirasuna", which literally means, "Flat sands" The alternate English translation is "the grand slum," a term used by the students here, Japanese and non-Japanese alike. The other popular joke is that the dorms were built as part of a POW camp that never panned out because the people all died before getting there, the lucky saps...

Added: July 30, 2008

Hey, my name is Daniel Puthawala and I'll be studying as an exchange student at Tsukuba University this year. I'll also be doing a weekly video blog about my experiences. Enjoy!

Ok, a bit of expansion & explanation:

While I'm in Japan, I'll be hopefully releasing at least one video a week.
During each video, I'll discuss relevant things that have happened to me, share anecdotes, introduce a new Japanese word, and answer viewer-generated questions. I'll make the first installment of the blog itself beginning a few days prior to leaving for Japan.

This blog is meant as a to be a periodic communication to people back at home and school in the states. Also, it is a free resource for those are interested in Japanese language, culture, or history, or have questions and are in
need of a "human search engine," tutor, or just want to learn random things about Japan. Lastly, I am offering this as a continuation of the Japanese Language Table I ran last year at SUNY Binghamton.

If you have any questions, objections, suggestions, or miscellaneous comments, ask me in an email at

Raynor35@gmail.com.

Hope to hear from you!
